Does anyone have a copy of the files that were on it? Na, you're not going to avoid it for anything nontrivial. For example, you will see things like JCL merging datasets from a few different sources, and then the COBOL will just make a report from the new dataset.

A lot easier to just change the JCL than to recompile the application if you need to change the inputs. But JCL isn't that difficult on its own. It just has two hurdles to using it. There's really nothing quite like it to apply other knowledge, and it's VERY picky about what it wants.
