Jorg wrote:As far as I know, it is a free TRIAL version. It was released as a full free edition for PERSONAL use. It isn't allowed to use the program for commercial projects. Other than that the user could do with it what he pleased. Unfortunately, Borland changed their policy with further editions of their programs (see the mess with the new Turbo versions). It was (and I suppose still is) legally OK to use the Delphi 6 PERSONAL edition to write freeware and open source projects. Unfortunately, Borland removed the possibility of downloading the program, and so it was mirrored at several locations.

These have since also been removed, but that is probably more to do with the age of the program than any licensing issues. Also note that Borland no longer exists as a company producing IDE's. It is also possible to find the program on old cd's distributed with computer programming magazines, so if anyone REALLY wants the program it can be found. Having said all that though, we as a development team will be ceasing development of wxDevC++ and moving to wxDevIDE, which we will be developing in wxDevC++. I don't know which sites were linked to for the program, but theoretically it is still legal to download the installer for Delphi 6 Personal.

The problem comes with installing it on a new computer and 'registering' it. If memory serves Borland provided key pairs for installation on their site. These are no longer available but perhaps a visit to an archive might provide these. I'm not too sure but I think this is still legal.

IMS these were provided for all installations after a specific date (and prior to this date each user received a separate key pair). It is of course now impossible to register the program with Borland, but this wasn't necessary in order to use the program. The updates were IMS covered by the same license. When Borland released Delphi 7 personal, this was supposedly only available on certain magazine cover disks, but even this version was provided on line by a German computer group (IMS WITH permission from Borland). So to cut a long story short, Borland Delphi 6 Personal Edition was NOT trial software at all, but a full featured IDE for development of NON commercial projects. Jorg wrote:Ok my bad. If I see a keygen exe or posted serial and I cannot find an official download link, my illegal software senses start to tingle.

So I am sorry that I removed the links, I was misinformed. Don't be sorry. It was perfectly justified. Although I don't think there is anything illegal about it, it probably is a bad idea to post the links. Most notably due to spyware or viruses.

My interpretation is that Embarcadero (the new Delphi owner) just wants to make sure they don't have to support the ancient versions of Delphi. I think it more of a liability issue on their part than a pirating issue. So although I doubt they would come after anyone from posting the links, I also doubt they would be happy with the idea.
